Constituents

Toms River Councilwoman Maria Maruca is a former small business owner and community volunteer who has identified Toms River as home since 1987.

Councilwoman Maruca has served as a member of the Toms River Township Council since 2004. Maria represents Ward 1, which includes the Township's barrier island sections, Fischer Boulevard corridor, and sections of Bay Shore, East Dover, and Gilford Park. It also includes
Shelter Cove, Silverton, and Snug Harbor.

Serving Toms River

Councilwoman Maruca is an advocate for her constituents. Since 2012, her work on the Council has focused on recovery and rebuilding from Superstorm Sandy. She has facilitated public outreach and community engagement to discuss flood risk and as well as new  elevation maps. She has advocated and worked diligently to secure Sandy recovery grants for Township taxpayers.

Councilwoman Maruca has worked diligently with various federal, state and local agencies to see to fruition the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dune and beach replenishment project. The project will help to protect Toms River's bay and beachfront communities.

From 2004 through 2010 Councilwoman Maruca chaired the council’s Land Use Committee, which provides guidance on decisions that will help residents and business owners plan for future development. Maria also serves as chair of the Council Capital Committee. The Committee oversees the long term infrastructure needs of the community concerning municipal parks, buildings, roadways, and other important improvements.

Name Change

Councilwoman Maruca Co-Chaired the Dover Township Name Change Committee in 2006, and supported and played a significant role in changing the Township's name from the Township of Dover to the Township of Toms River. The name was officially changed on November 14, 2006. Councilwoman Maruca also served as a liaison to the Township's 250th Anniversary Commission in 2017.

Professional Career

In the private sector, Maria works for the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Councilwoman Maruca graduated from Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville. For years she worked in the family business, Maruca's Tomato Pies on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights and Seaside Park.

Public Service

She has a long record of service. She is the former Executive Director of the Seaside Heights Business Improvement District 2000 to 2012. Councilwoman Maruca has volunteered and served on the:

Personal Information

Maria is a member of St. Justin’s Roman Catholic Church. She enjoys spending time with her family and traveling.
