As Older Americans Month comes to a close, Toms River honors its seniors by opening a Nutrition Site at the Township Senior Center on 652 Garfield Avenue.

Federally funded, the Community Services, Inc of Ocean County will provide hot meals, twice a week, to the Toms River Nutrition site.  Jim Sigurdson, Executive Director for Community Services, Inc. said, “The meals are prepared and packaged offsite and then brought in by a heated refrigerator truck.”

On Tuesdays and Fridays, a different hot lunch will be served which includes meat, fish or pasta, vegetables, bread, juice, fruit or dessert, milk, coffee or tea. All menus are approved by a qualified dietitian and are planned to provide at least one-third of the recommended daily dietary allowances set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Each participant is asked to make a donation toward the cost of the meal. There is no required payment, but a $2.00 donation per meal is suggested. The method of payment is strictly confidential. All participant donations are put back into the Congregate Nutrition operating grant to help further the program.

On the first day of the Nutrition Program, Councilman Jeff Carr and Freeholder Joe Vicari were there to pass out meals to the seniors.  Councilman Carr stated, “Certainly getting a healthy meal is important, but the bigger advantage here is that you get to gather together to meet new friends and enjoy the camaraderie.” Carr noted that the seniors enjoyed today’s meal of stuffed shells, broccoli and carrots. Freeholder Vicari said, “People are living longer because they are eating better.  In Ocean County, we want to insure our seniors are getting a healthy meal.”

Meals will be served for a $2.00 donation on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:30-12:30.  Transportation may be provided. You must call the Senior Center by Noon of the Previous Day if you want a meal, at 732 341-1000 ext. 8461.
