Preparations have already begun for Toms River’s dune replenishment project. Mayor Tom Kelaher says that truckloads of sand are being delivered today, starting in the Northern Beach section of the barrier island, which includes the areas of Normandy, Chadwick and Monterey Beaches.
Kelaher says, “We are building dunes as a preventative measure for future storms. We are only constructing dunes in the areas where we have easements signed from the private beach associations, and other areas as required.” The project was awarded to Wickberg Marine Contracting, at a cost of $1.3 million. Weather permitting, they will have 30 days to complete the task on the base contract.
